Backlash leads to pullback on Cho video

Duhhhh.  Did Media outlets  really think that it was OK to continually show this video footage??  Why not just show it once and then drop it!!  What in the hell is wrong with you people??  Forget the business side of this story for one damn second.

“It has value as breaking news,” said ABC News spokesman Jeffrey Schneider, “but then becomes practically pornographic as it is just repeated ad nauseam.”

Jon Klein, president of CNN U.S., said the decision to air it was a tough call.

“As breaking news, it’s pertinent to our understanding of why this was done,” he said. “Then, once the public has seen the material and digested it, then it’s fair to say, `How much should we be showing it?’ I think it’s to the credit of news organizations that they are dialing back.”

So let’s guess what the news headlines and stories will be tonight…  It will be about the public outcry to pull the video that they decided to air over and over again.  It will be a bunch of journalist talking about what their role is as reporters and news specialist; yadda yadda yadda.

They will attempt to justify their decisions and try to make it seem like it was a hard choice rather to show the videos or not.  It does not take a rocket scientist to know that should use discretion when showing the man responsible for killing 32 people and injuring multiple others only days after his attack.  NBC could have held on the the tape and only showed a couple of clips then not show it anymore, but they decided to share it with all the major networks, all in the name of finding a breaking story to an all ready breaking story.

  1. My fear Native Son is that this gunman probably already has a cult following and some sicko has built a shrine around his picture. God forbid something like this happens again, but when someone like this is portrayed as a martyr, it only leads to future violence like last Monday.

And it is already happening! We’ve had what, schools in California, Texas and Minnesota on lockdown, a teenager kill himself in the high school parking lot after threatening to kill other students (Penn.?), and today a gunman at the space center in Houston kill someone and hold hostages….Why did the media have to broadcast the actual video? Why couldn’t they just show a still picture and report what he said. You are right in that he will be idolized by all those sick people out there looking for their sick 15 minutes of fame!
You may or may not have seen this, I have been home all week in preparation for moving, so I got to see a lot of the coverage…you should have seen Shepard Smith (Fox) and another broadcaster playing the poor, troubled journalists, lamenting on how hard it is on THEM to see the poor college students crying and grieving, and of course, it is all in the name of good journalism..Larry King, interviewing a young man who was in one of the classrooms: “did you see people get killed?” what an idiot.

  3. Sadly, Kerry, it’s all about the ratings..
