O’Reilly…..

I know a lot of people will read this article and think to themselves: “What’s the big deal?”  But O’Reilly knows what he is doing.  The comments O’Reilly made is what we call a back-handed compliment; they were ignorant comments and I think he said them just to get people stirred.

After having lunch with Sharpton at Harlem’s Sylvias, a upscale black owned soul food restaurant, he made the comment these comments:

he “couldn’t get over the fact” that there was no difference between the black-run Sylvia’s and other restaurants.

“It was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun,” he said. “And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.”

Okay what would any person expect at an upscale restaurant?  You expect quality service, great food and a great atmosphere.  He made these comments as if black owned restaurants are usually some sort of shoot em up bang bang free for all.

Then to back up his comments, this fool had the nerve to say that he attended an Anita Baker concert and it was equally mixed with black and white concert goers.  He went on to say:

“The band was excellent, but they were dressed in tuxedoes, and this is what white America doesn’t know, particularly people who don’t have a lot of interaction with black Americans,” he said. “They think the culture is dominated by Twista, Ludacris and Snoop Dogg.”

Anita Baker is an 80’s R&B jazz superstar, her concerts attract people of all races.  The audience is older and mature; what else would one expect?  Does he and the other white people who he claims he is speaking for think that all black people listen to is gangsta rap?  Do they really believe that we all sit around in our homes across the country smoking weed and acting ignorant?  Does O’Reilly make the same assumptions  about white people who listen to heavy metal or hard rock music? I think not!!  So why think this way about all black people?  Ignorance is bliss…..

I have news for O’Reilly; white people go to Snoop Dog, Ludacris and Twista concerts in large numbers. As a matter of fact, hasn’t it been proven that the majority of people who purchase this kind of hip-hop is not black people, but white youth!!

His comments were ignorant with racial overtones.  But I have always said that in this country, we have been culturally conditioned to underestimate, undervalue and marginalize people of color; and this incident was a perfect example.

  1. I don’t know who is worse, O’Reilly or Juan Williams. Mr. Williams provided staunch defense for Mr. O’Reilly’s comments.

  2. Hmm..I’m not going to label Mr. O’Reilly a card carrying member of the KKK or his comments racist. However, they were ignorant, outlandish and inappropriate. I feel if he were a racist, he would not even be seen with Sharpton or in a black owned establishment.

  3. I agree he is not a raicst, but ignorant. Ignorant indeed. This goes back to the comments that Sen. Biden made about Obama being clean cut

Definitely. I think people just sometimes need to keep their unsolicited comments to themselves.

  5. “I think people just sometimes need to keep their unsolicited comments to themselves.”

But we all have to remember that O’Reilly and Fox make money off of his unsolicited comments. People should not be naive as to think that O’Reilly’s comments were a slip of the tongue. He and the Rush Limbaughs of the world make these comments to incite controversy. They want to get as close to the edge of the line as possible so that they can garner headlines, listeners and notoriety.

O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh get paid NOT to keep their unsolicited comments to themselves. Their statements are calculated to incite controversy. They have made their names by getting as close to the line as possible without going over it. Although I’ve never watched either person’s full show, I understand that they are in the business to make money. They aren’t paid to be accurate, objective social commentators.
